On an early spring day in 2018, I was taking a walk on a beach with my friend Steve. He’s a very successful Wall Street analyst. Currently, he’s involved with three start-ups helping them acquire some seed money—the kind that’s 25 to 50 million dollars.
On our walk, he expressed deep concern about a person who he brought onto his team. He had doubts about this person because my friend wasn’t getting the respect from this team member that he deserved.
Steve really needed to deal with this “problem” before the company got too big. In other words, before he asked investors for millions of dollars, he needed to know if he should let this person go.
When I asked Steve how big he thought this company could get, he confidently, said, “Oh, this could probably be a billion dollar company.” My eyes widened. I was impressed. I didn’t know he was involved with something of this magnitude. This was serious stuff he was dealing with.
After our walk, he finally asked me, “So, what do you think I should do?”
I was taken aback. I didn’t really think I could have any input on the matter because I’m not a Wall Street guy.
I said, “Well, I don’t really know enough about your business. However, based on what you’ve been telling me, I think you need to follow your intuition. You’ve been telling me how you ‘feel,’ but then you counter that with what an asset this person is with his skills.” I paused a moment and then said, “You know, some of the most highly successful people credit their enormous success on their intuition more than anything else. More than knowledge. Go with your intuition, not how good he looks on paper.”
His reply was, “Wow. I knew you were smart. That was the most articulate way anyone could have answered that. Thank you. I think I know what to do.”
